Lausavísur — Þjsk LvI

Þorleifr jarlsskáld Rauðfeldarson

Kate Heslop 2012, ‘ Þorleifr jarlsskáld Rauðfeldarson, Lausavísur’ in Diana Whaley (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 1: From Mythical Times to c. 1035. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 1. Turnhout: Brepols, p. 375. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=1450> (accessed 25 April 2024)

The two lausavísur edited here (Þjsk Lv 5-6), one about the destruction of Þorleifr’s ship and the other about a supernatural opponent, are apparently unconnected, and are attached to very different narratives within ÞorlJ (see Contexts). According to the chronology of ÞorlJ in Flat, they date from the early 990s, but the authenticity of some of their diction is doubtful (see Notes to Lv 5/6 and 6/8 below) and they were probably composed some centuries after Þorleifr’s death, perhaps by the author of ÞorlJ. The mss used here are Flat as main ms., 4867ˣ and 563aˣ; see the entry for ÞorlJ in ‘Sources’ in Introduction to this volume. The remainder of Þorleifr’s lausavísur are edited by Russell Poole in SkP V (Þjsk Lv 1a, 2-4V (Svarfd 5, 6, 12, 13)) and SkP IV (Lv 1bIV, a variant to 1a).

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
