Eysteinsdrápa — ESk EystdrII

Einarr Skúlason

Kari Ellen Gade 2009, ‘ Einarr Skúlason, Eysteinsdrápa’ in Kari Ellen Gade (ed.), Poetry from the Kings’ Sagas 2: From c. 1035 to c. 1300. Skaldic Poetry of the Scandinavian Middle Ages 2. Turnhout: Brepols, pp. 559-61. <https://skaldic.org/m.php?p=text&i=1143> (accessed 24 April 2024)

Following Jón Sigurðsson (SnE 1848-87, III, 363), Finnur Jónsson assigns these two sts about King Eysteinn Haraldsson to EysteinsdrápaDrápa about Eysteinn’ (ESk Eystdr), composed after Eysteinn’s death in 1157. Both sts are attributed to Einarr, but no medieval source mentions an Eysteinsdrápa and it is also uncertain whether the sts belong to the same poem (see Fidjestøl 1982, 155). The sts are preserved in HsonaHkr (, F, E, J2ˣ) and in H-Hr (H, Hr), and the first is also found in Mork (Mork). is the main ms. The first st. commemorates Eysteinn’s expedition to England in 1151 (see also ESk Run), and the second describes his death in 1157.

Information about a text: poem, sequence of stanzas, or prose work

This page is used for different resources. For groups of stanzas such as poems, you will see the verse text and, where published, the translation of each stanza. These are also links to information about the individual stanzas.

For prose works you will see a list of the stanzas and fragments in that prose work, where relevant, providing links to the individual stanzas.

Where you have access to introduction(s) to the poem or prose work in the database, these will appear in the ‘introduction’ section.

The final section, ‘sources’ is a list of the manuscripts that contain the prose work, as well as manuscripts and prose works linked to stanzas and sections of a text.
