The two sts belong to a praise poem, Elfarvísur ‘Vísur about the Götaälv’ (ESk Elfv), composed in honour of the Norw. district chieftain Grégóríus Dagsson (see ‘Biographies of Other Dignitaries’ in Introduction to this vol. and ESk Ingdr). The poem commemorates the battle of the river Götaälv (1159) in which King Ingi Haraldsson, Erlingr skakki ‘the Tilting’ Kyrpinga-Ormsson and Grégóríus fought against the royal pretender Hákon herðibreiðr ‘Broad-shoulder’, the son of Sigurðr munnr Haraldsson. The names of the poem and the poet are transmitted in Hkr (ÍF 28, 358-9) and in H-Hr (Fms 7, 266-7). Both sts are preserved in HákherðHkr (Kˣ, F, E, J2ˣ, 42ˣ) and in H-Hr (H, Hr). Stanza 1/5-8 is cited in mss R, Tˣ, U, A, B, C of SnE (Skm) and in ms. A of The Fifth Grammatical Treatise (GrammSkáld). AM 744 4°ˣ (744ˣ) has also been used selectively (see Introduction to ESk Run) above. In F, the sts are given in the reverse order. Kˣ is the main ms.
