[7] Yngva ‘Yngvi’: See Note to [All] above. Here Yngvi appears as a pers. n. for a king of the Svíar, though most frequently in skaldic poetry the word functions as a common noun for ‘king, ruler’. For a discussion of the many senses of this name and its connection to the dynasty of the Ynglingar and the god Freyr, see Introduction to Þjóð YtI and Note to Yt 11/8I, where Yngvi also appears as a pers. n. There it is suggested that Yngvi might be a short form of Ingjaldr, which is given as the Swedish king’s name in the oldest ms. (7) of Ǫrv.
