[4] vetrímnir ‘winter-fighter’: A hap. leg. The second element of this cpd, ‑ímnir, is usually considered a corrupt form of ‑mímir in either Vetmímir or Vetrmímir (see LP: vetrímnir, Skj B: vetrmímir and Note to Þul Himins I l. 15). The form ‑ímnir, however, has a parallel among the heiti for ‘sword’ (from íma f. ‘battle’; see Þul Sverða 9/3 and Note there). Hence, ‑ímnir in vetrímnir may be explained either as a result of confusion with the sword-heiti or as a figurative name for the stormy sky (lit. ‘winter-fighter’).
