Note to Anon Pl 47VII

[1-3] hranna hyrbrjótr fór at móti miklu liði hermanna ‘the destroyer of the fire of the waves [GOLD > GENEROUS MAN] went to meet a great host of warriors’: Finnur Jónsson (1887) claimed to read ‘hyrbriotr liþe’ but emended to -brióts, while reading Herr manna for the opening ‘Her maɴa’, making: Herr manna fór at móti miklu liði hranna hyrbrjóts ‘An army of men came towards the [man’s] great army’. Jón Helgason questioned the validity of normalising to herr as well as Finnur’s reading of the final <r> in the very unclear ‘hyrbriotr’. Jón’s interpretation is reproduced here.
