Anon Mgr 36VII/1 — mun*i ‘would’

‘Efalaus var eg, að upp mun*i rísa,
ein þváttdaginn, Kristr inn hreini’;
þjóðir halda því nú síðan
þenna dag til dýrðar henni.
Yfirþjóðkonungs allra jöfra
öllu góðu í himna höllu
ræðr og stýrir mær og móðir
Máría sæl hjá dróttni várum.

‘Eg ein var efalaus þváttdaginn, að inn hreini Kristr mun*i rísa upp’; því halda þjóðir nú síðan þenna dag til dýrðar henni. Mær og móðir yfirþjóðkonungs allra jöfra ræðr og stýrir öllu góðu í höllu himna, sæl Máría, hjá dróttni várum.

‘I alone was without doubt on the Saturday [lit. wash-day], that the pure Christ would rise up’; therefore people now afterwards hold this day in her honour. The Virgin and mother of the supreme king of all princes [= God (= Christ) > = Mary] rules and governs everything good in the hall of the heavens, blessed Mary, next to our Lord.

notes

[1-2]: Cf. Mar (1871, 1011): ok alldri efandizt um hans upprisu ‘and never doubting his resurrection’. — [1] mun*i (3rd pers. sg. pres. subj.) ‘would’: The ms. reading mundi (3rd pers. sg. pret. subj.) ‘would’ makes the l. one syllable too long. See NN §2680C, and the similar construction in 18/5.
