Ólafur konungur dró saman lið mikið austan úr landi um
sumarið og hélt liði því norður til Þrándheims og lagði fyrst
inn til Niðaróss. Síðan lét hann fara þingboð um allan
fjörðinn og stefndi átta fylkna þing á Frostu en bændur sneru
þingboðinu í herör og stefndu saman þegn og þræl um allan
Þrándheim. En er konungur kom til þings þá var kominn
bóndamúgurinn með alvæpni. En er þing var sett þá talaði
konungur fyrir lýðnum og bauð þeim að taka við kristni.
En er hann hafði litla hríð talað þá kölluðu bændur og báðu
hann þegja, segja að ella mundu þeir veita honum atgöngu og
reka hann í brott. "Gerðum vér svo," sögðu þeir, "við Hákon
Aðalsteinsfóstra þá er hann bauð oss þvílík boð og virðum vér
þig eigi meira en hann."
En er Ólafur konungur sá æði búendanna og það með að þeir
höfðu her svo mikinn að eigi mátti við standa, þá veik hann
ræðunni og sneri til samþykkis við bændur, segir svo: "Eg vil
að vér gerum sætt vora svo sem vér höfum áður lagt með oss.
Vil eg fara þar til er þér hafið hið mesta blót yðar og sjá
þar siðu yðra. Tökum þá ráð vort um siðu, hverja vér viljum
hafa, og samþykkjum þá það allir."
En er konungur talaði linlega til bónda þá mýktust hugir
þeirra og fór síðan allt talið líklega og sáttgjarnlega og
var það ráðið að lyktum að vera skyldi miðsumarsblót inni á
Mærini og skyldu þar til koma allir höfðingjar og ríkir
bændur svo sem siður var til. Þar skyldi og koma Ólafur
konungur.
