Ólafur konungur hafði verið í hernaði vestur í Vallandi tvö sumur og einn vetur. Þá var liðið frá falli Ólafs konungs Tryggvasonar þrettán vetur.

Þá voru í Vallandi jarlar tveir, Vilhjálmur og Roðbert. Faðir þeirra var Ríkarður Rúðujarl. Þeir réðu fyrir Norðmandí. Systir þeirra var Emma drottning er Aðalráður Englakonungur hafði átt. Synir þeirra voru þeir Játmundur og Játvarður hinn góði, Játvígur og Játgeir. Ríkarður Rúðujarl var sonur Ríkarðar sonar Vilhjálms langaspjóts. Hann var sonur Göngu-Hrólfs jarls þess er vann Norðmandí. Hann var sonur Rögnvalds Mærajarls hins ríka sem fyrr er ritað. Frá Göngu-Hrólfi eru komnir Rúðujarlar og töldu þeir lengi síðan frændsemi við Noregshöfðingja og virtu þeim það lengi síðan og voru hinir mestu vinir Norðmanna alla stund og áttu með þeim friðlönd allir Norðmenn, þeir er það vildu þekkjast.

Um haustið kom Ólafur konungur í Norðmandí og dvaldist þar um veturinn í Signu og hafði þar friðland.
